Popular Harrow golf & leisure centre Playgolf Northwick Park is laying on a ‘devil’ of an offer later this month (March) with a special 6-6-6 promotion.

Golfers can enjoy SIX holes of the ‘Majors’ golf course, on the last SIX days of the month - for just SIX pounds.

The special incentive at the Watford Road complex is being held to mark the end of the centre’s 6-hole course as, from Wednesday 2nd April, it will become a 9-hole venue.

Jimmy Wallace, General Manager at Playgolf Northwick Park, says: “Finishing touches are now being made on the new hole which will make us London’s premier 9-hole golf course.

“Our special deal for golfers commemorates the end of our 6-hole course and the beginning of an exciting new era at Playgolf Northwick Park.”

Each of the holes at Northwick Park is a tribute to some of the most famous holes in golf – including the 12th and 16th at Augusta and the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon.

The identity of the new par 3 hole - designed to play like its well-known double which has hosted one of the world’s most famous competitions - is strictly under wraps until 2nd April.

The new hole will play as the 8th hole on the new 9-hole course, which has been deliberately constructed so people can play a round of golf ‘around the world’.

In addition to becoming a 9-hole venue, Playgolf Northwick Park ‘Majors’ course will also be permanently set up to play PowerPlay Golf - the new way to play golf which features two flags on every green.

The Harrow complex also features a 56-bay floodlit and heated two-tier range, American Golf store, Premium Golf Schools teaching academy, The National Short Game Centre golf practice area, the 9-hole ‘Mini Majors’ Adventure Golf Course, state-of-the-art gym and the UK’s only fully automated baseball and softball batting cages.

MONEY-SAVING HALF TERM OFFERS AT HARROW FAMILY ATTRACTION

Popular Harrow golf & leisure centre Playgolf Northwick Park is laying on a range of money-saving offers to keep the whole family entertained this half term holiday.

A special Family Day Ticket is available entitling unlimited use of the 56-bay driving range, 9-hole ‘Mini Majors’ Adventure Golf Course and baseball batting cages at the Watford Road complex.

The Family Day Ticket costs just £40 and admits two adults and two children for the day.

NEW 8TH HOLE AT NORTHWICK PARK IS SHAPING UP WELL

Progress is good on the new hole at Playgolf Northwick Park. Due to open for play on 01 April 2008, the new Par Three will complete our transformation to a full Nine Hole golf course, in readiness for the expansion of PowerPlay Golf in 2008. Walk down to the Baseball cages to see the new tees, and get a look at the angled green - guarded by several bunkers and some newly-planted heather.

But which hole is it? Northwick Park is the 'Majors' golf course, where every hole is an accurate tribute to a famous hole from golf's major tournaments - so can you spot which hole we've paid tribute to?

All we're saying is that it's in the UK, and it's a difficult par three... All will be revealed closer to the April 2008 launch. But we CAN guarantee that it will be in immaculate condition, like the rest of our greens - often described as the best in the South of England, and certainly London's best, most Tour-like putting surfaces.

More trees will be planted soon, to shield the revised putting green to the right of the new hole, and we'll be growing the fairway grass to create extra definition. We can't wait to open our new 8th hole for play, so keep visiting Playgolf Northwick Park to check on progress!

NORTHWICK PARK TO BECOME 9-HOLE POWERPLAY GOLF CENTRE

'Tribute' golf course aims to be London's premier 9-hole venue

Playgolf Northwick Park, which opened in 2006 with a unique 6-hole layout featuring replicas of famous golf holes from around the world, is to be extended to nine holes and will become a permanent PowerPlay Golf centre.

Following extensive feedback from golfers who have played the 6-hole Majors Course at Playgolf Northwick Park in the last 18 months, Peter McEvoy, one of the original brains behind the concept admitted today: "It has become clear to us that while golfers support the need for a shorter version of the game, the answer is not just fewer holes. Golfers want a new, shorter form of golf and PowerPlay Golf is the answer.

“We will build one new tee at Northwick Park to fully realise our 9-hole vision, but in all other respects it is ready to become London’s premier 9-hole golf course.”

Owners Playgolf (Holdings) Plc were granted planning permission for a 9-hole course on the land in Harrow, London, building eight full holes and incorporating the ninth tour-specification green into an expanded National Short Game Centre.

In a bid to create a shortened, faster version of the game, Playgolf Northwick Park launched Europe’s first 6-hole ‘tribute’ golf course, using the eight holes in rotation.

Now a combination of a new tee and the original ninth green will enable Northwick Park to become a 9-hole PowerPlay Golf 'Super Venue', while the National Short Game Centre reverts to a 3-green facility.

Northwick Park, whose tribute holes include the 12th and 16th at Augusta and the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon, will be permanently set up to play PowerPlay Golf - the new way to play golf which features two flags on every green, hailed by many as golf's answer to Twenty20 cricket.

Playgolf Holdings chief executive, David Piggins, said: "Golf in an hour sounds like a great idea but the feedback we have had over two years is that playing six holes just does not justify either the travel or the time off work, or give players enough satisfaction.

“We have found that PowerPlay Golf is being embraced as golf’s answer to Twenty20 cricket and we will provide that with a 9-hole PowerPlay Golf centre at Northwick Park.

"Going to nine holes will not affect the quality of golf on offer there, because we built full-size greens to start with. We remain fully committed to offering golfers the ultimate experience when it comes to playing a shorter, faster version of the game.

“We were the first people in the world to try 6-hole golf. Evidence from the pilot phase of PowerPlay Golf suggests that 9-hole golf presented in a more exciting and dramatic way is what golfers are after. This is supported by the fact that PowerPlay Golf is already a regular fixture at more than 100 golf courses in the UK, as well as at several in Australia and South Africa.”
Meanwhile, the new £16m Playsport Scotland development near Glasgow (formerly known as Playgolf East Kilbride) will be a full-scale tribute to nine of the most famous Open links holes, designed again by distinguished amateur McEvoy. And like Northwick Park, it will be a permanent PowerPlay Golf 'Super Venue'.

Peter McEvoy, the former GB&I Walker Cup captain, said: "Golfers love the course at Northwick Park and they love the quality. But they want nine holes.

“We expect both courses – especially Playsport Scotland’s stunning links tribute course – to be exceptionally popular."

GOLFERS PLAY FOR LESS DURING RUGBY WORLD CUP 07!

London’s Playgolf Northwick Park drops prices while Home Nations survive...

Popular London golf complex Playgolf Northwick Park has announced a reduction in its green free prices to just £10 a round – as long as one of the Home Nations survives in this year’s Rugby World Cup 2007.

And even though England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland haven't looked like world-beaters in the group stages, at least one team will make it into October... we think.

The offer started on Friday 7 September, the day the World Cup kicks off, and ends – potentially – when the final whistle blows on Saturday October 20, in the Rugby World Cup Final. But with most rugby fans expecting at least one Quarter Final place for England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland, the first crunch weekend is likely to be 6-7 October, the first knockout stage.

A special charity golf day in London in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer gave some of England’s best-known footballers the chance to play PowerPlay Golf for the first time at Northwick Park.

And the Premiership elite declared themselves big fans of golf’s breakthrough 2-flags-a-hole format.

Former QPR, Tottenham and England forward and keen golfer, Les Ferdinand, who is a big supporter of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, was the driving force behind the day at Playgolf Northwick Park.

“I wanted to do something a bit different to the standard golf day, and PowerPlay seemed like the perfect answer. I really enjoyed the format, it really makes you think about each shot and about when to go for it – I didn’t always get it right today!,” said Ferdinand.

His former Spurs colleague, Jamie Redknapp, was in full agreement. “Golf’s hard enough for me as it is, but I really enjoyed it,” laughed the 9-handicapper. “It’s easy to follow and makes a real change from normal golf. I’d definitely look forward to playing it again.”

PowerPlay Golf was first played at Playgolf Northwick Park in Spring 2007 and on Saturday, June 30th, the first qualifying round for the London PowerPlay Golf championships will take place – with entry places still available.

PowerPlay Golf has been designed by successful Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy to reduce the length of time required to play golf. It gives a complete competitive and strategic golf experience in half the time of a full round of golf.

It is pencilled-in to be trialled at more than 100 British golf clubs this Summer.

Played over 9 holes, it is exactly like golf in the popular Stableford format but with one key exception: each green has two flags, an easy white and a difficult black.

From the tee, every golfer must pick the tough black flag three times in the round; if they score net birdie or better on the black flag, they double their points for the hole. All other outcomes are scored exactly as normal Stableford golf.

And according to ex-Arsenal star Lee Dixon, PowerPlay Golf actually helps your handicap, too. “What I like about it is that it’s so good for your short game,” said the 3-handicapper. “The black flag really focuses the mind and makes you think about your decision-making. I would definitely play it again.”

Les Ferdinand and Breakthrough Breast Cancer were thrilled with the outcome of the day at Playgolf Northwick Park, which culminated in a one-off auction in aid of the charity. The most prized lot was an England shirt signed by the team that drew with Brazil in the first international match at the new Wembley, just a pitching wedge away from the fairways of Playgolf Northwick Park.

Hi there,

I was delighted to read your press release confirming the reprieve for the baseball & softball batting cages at your excellent facility.

I am always dismayed that a minority feel it is their right to deprive large numbers of people of leisure facilities simply because they themselves do not utilize those facilities. Surely the UK is in need of more outdoor entertainment centres such as yours to combat the growing obesity epidemic.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, but visited Playgolf Northwick Park with my UK resident relatives, on my recent trip to London. I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of the facilities, the service and the moderate pricing. That is not something you can say for most forms of entertainment in London.

It is unique in the UK and yet certain people still want it removed! An extremely narrow-minded attitude. The same attitude that resulted in the location of Euro-Disney (and the tax revenues it generates), to Paris rather than West London.

The fact that common sense has prevailed is good news and I wish you every success in the future.

Playgolf Northwick Park wins appeal to keep batting cages open in Harrow

The future for London’s only automated baseball and softball cages has been secured, after plans to have them ripped up were quashed by the Planning Inspectorate.

Now bosses at Playgolf Northwick Park, home of the sports complex in Harrow, London, have welcomed the decision as a ‘victory for commonsense’ and slammed critics for undermining their attempts to create and maintain a world class leisure facility in the borough.

Following complaints by a handful of unrepresentative local residents, Brent Council issued an enforcement notice alleging the erection of a baseball batting cage was a breach of planning control at the £6m world class golf and leisure facility in Watford Road, Harrow.

They asked for the nine cages and lighting to be completely removed and the concrete base dug up and returfed.

But Playgolf Northwick Park’s appeal against the notice, which saw more than 50 supporters pack council rooms in Brent in February, was this week upheld by the government’s Planning Inspectorate.

Jimmy Wallace, general manager at Northwick Park, said: “We are delighted by what is clearly a decision for commonsense.

“Our batting cages are unique in the UK and have been used by hundreds of schools, organisations and families in the Harrow area.

“They are clearly very popular and have created a much-needed facility in a part of London that was crying out for a world class sports and leisure complex.”

In granting Playgolf Northwick Park’s appeal, Inspector Mr D A Hainsworth said: “I consider the court to be an open-air facility for sport and recreation that complies with the Metropolitan Open Land policies in the London Plan.”

He said the cages were ‘well sited’ in the complex, at a lower level than the access road, partially screened and there was plenty of parking space for visitors.

He added: “The kiosk, pitching machines and lighting equipment are unobtrusive.”

Playgolf have agreed to make several alterations to the batting cage, which will include lowering the central column which supports the nets by 3m, lowering the netting when it is not in use and carrying out more planting on the Watford Road boundary.

David Piggins, chief executive of Playgolf Holdings Plc said: “I am very pleased the Inspector could see the value that Playgolf Northwick Park provides to the local community and greater London as a whole.

“There is a vocal minority of people living near the complex who are hell bent on trying to destroy a facility that is used and enjoyed by thousands of people every week – sometimes up to 4,000 people a weekend in Summer.

“I am delighted the government has confirmed that its policy supports our stance. This is an innovative facility that is great for London and, in the case of the baseball and softball cages, great for the UK.”

There are nine fully automated baseball and softball cages at Playgolf Northwick Park, with people of all ages able to select from three balls speeds. The cages sit alongside a unique 8-hole Majors golf course, 56-bay driving range, the National Short Game Centre and an adventure putting course.

Capital city gets world's first PowerPlay Golf open event

Ground-breaking Middlesex golf venue Playgolf Northwick Park has announced the entry details and requirements for the inaugural London PowerPlay Golf Championships.

Four events will take place over the summer at the popular Harrow complex, beginning on June 30 and culminating in a grand final in September.

Described as golf’s answer to Twenty20 Cricket, PowerPlay Golf is a shortened version of the normal game, played over nine holes, but with each green containing two flags: one black, one white.

Players are required to aim for the much-harder black flag on three of the nine holes. Stableford points are doubled for birdies and net birdies on the black flags, meaning a bad round can turn into a good round in an instant.

At the London PowerPlay Golf Championships, golfers will play twice round the highly-rated six-hole Majors course at Playgolf Northwick Park – three holes to warm up, followed by nine holes of serious PowerPlay Golf competition.

Entry to the PowerPlay Golf Championships is open to men up to a handicap limit of 28 and women with a maximum handicap of 36. And there’s good news for players without an official handicap who wish to acquire one to take part in the Championships - as Playgolf Northwick Park can help golfers to do so beforehand with their official handicapping scheme.

The cost to enter the London PowerPlay Golf Championships is £25 for non-members of Playgolf Northwick Park, to include 12 holes on the Majors course, a bucket of 50 balls on the state-of-the-art driving range, plus use of the National Short Game Centre. The cost for members is £20.

Players are free to enter any of the four previously-announced qualifiers, with the top eight players in each tournament securing a berth in the Grand Final on September 29th, 2007.
